   During the period of history when rome was the strong power in the western world, Gaius Julius Caesar emerged as an important religious leader and powerful politician Caesar was also a great general, and he was instrumental in changing the Romen Rupublic into the Roman Empire.

  Julius Caesar lived from about 100 B.C. to 44 B.C. He was born to a noble family. After his father died, Caesar became the head of the family when he was only 16 years old. At the age of 17, he became the Flamen Dials, the high priest of Jupiter. The holder for this postiion had to be a noble. Later he becmae a soldier and then a corrupt politician. Finally, to escape prosecution, he became governor of several provinces in notrhern Italy. In this position he conquered all of Gaul(the region of Western Europe) and extended the Roman world to the Atlantic Ocean. Caesar also invaded Britain as well.

  Later he returned to Rome, where he became Roman dictator. Then he embarked on the conquest of North Africa and Egypt. He returned to Rome again as a hero, and after giving up his dictatorship, he ruled the republic as consul an office similar to that of the president. However, when he resigned as consul in 46B.C. he appointed the new rulers of Rome instead of allowing them to be elected. This angered the senate. Caesar was named“dictator for life”by the senate, even though many

senators were plotting against him.

  In 44 B.C., Caesar was lured to a temple and killed by a group of senators including Caesar’s formerfriend Marcus Junius Brutus. They struck Caesar about 23 times as he stood at the base of Pompey’s statue. Those senators hoped to restore the Republic. However, Caesar’s assassination led to another Roman civil war. As a result, Rome became a permanent autocracy, and Gaius Octavius, known as Caesar Augustus, became the first Roman Emperor.
